Kitchens in the days of early settlers

In the days of the early settlers not only was the outhouse out the back, but so was the kitchen. It was detached from the house but connected by a passageway with a roof but without sides. The reason for this was that a lot of the homes had thatched roofs and all of the cooking was done over an open fire. Open fires with sparks and thatched roofs don’t mix.
