In the early 1920s there was no such thing as designing a kitchen to suit your needs. The coal range was located in virtually the same spot in every New Zealand home because it always had to be anchored to a chimney. The watershed moment for kitchen design was the arrival of the electric stove which you could put where you wanted it.
